Obama ‘Kill Switch’ To Shut Down The Internet
“The legislation says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines or software firms that the US Government selects “shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed” by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined,” reports ZDNet’s Declan McCullagh.
The 197-page bill (PDF) is entitled Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, or PCNAA.
Technology lobbying group TechAmerica warned that the legislation created “the potential for absolute power,” while the Center for Democracy and Technology worried that the bill’s emergency powers “include authority to shut down or limit internet traffic on private systems.”
The bill has the vehement support of Senator Jay Rockefeller, who last year asked during a congressional hearing, “Would it had been better if we’d have never invented the Internet?” while fearmongering about cyber-terrorists preparing attacks.
The largest Internet-based corporations are seemingly happy with the bill, primarily because it contains language that will give them immunity from civil lawsuits and also reimburse them for any costs incurred if the Internet is shut down for a period of time.
“If there’s an “incident related to a cyber vulnerability” after the President has declared an emergency and the affected company has followed federal standards, plaintiffs’ lawyers cannot collect damages for economic harm. And if the harm is caused by an emergency order from the Feds, not only does the possibility of damages virtually disappear, but the US Treasury will even pick up the private company’s tab,” writes McCullagh.
New Bill Gives Obama Kill Switch To Shut Down The Internet 150410banner1
Tom Gann, McAfee’s vice president for government relations, described the bill as a “very important piece of legislation”.
As we have repeatedly warned for years, the federal government is desperate to seize control of the Internet because the establishment is petrified at the fact that alternative and independent media outlets are now eclipsing corporate media outlets in terms of audience share, trust, and influence.
We witnessed another example of this on Monday when establishment Congressman Bob Etheridge was publicly shamed after he was shown on video assaulting two college students who asked him a question. Two kids with a flip cam and a You Tube account could very well have changed the course of a state election, another startling reminder of the power of the Internet and independent media, and why the establishment is desperate to take that power away.
The government has been searching for any avenue possible through which to regulate free speech on the Internet and strangle alternative media outlets, with the FTC recently proposing a “Drudge Tax” that would force independent media organizations to pay fees that would be used to fund mainstream newspapers.
Similar legislation aimed at imposing Chinese-style censorship of the Internet and giving the state the power to shut down networks has already been passed globally, including in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.
We have extensively covered efforts to scrap the internet as we know it and move toward a greatly restricted “internet 2″ system. Handing government the power to control the Internet would only be the first step towards this system, whereby individual ID’s and government permission would be required simply to operate a website.
The Lieberman bill needs to be met with fierce opposition at every level and from across the political spectrum. Regulation of the Internet would not only represent a massive assault on free speech, it would also create new roadblocks for e-commerce and as a consequence further devastate the economy.

Chris Medina Sings For Brain Damaged Girlfriend Julia Ramos ‘American Idol’(VIDEO)
The 26-year old barista from Illinois appeared on Wednesday’s tryout episode of the national singing competition, and brought with him his girlfriend, Julia Ramos. She was there for a different kind of inspiration: two weeks before they were to marry, Ramos was in a car accident, leaving her with brain damage.
Chris Medina’s fiancee Juliana Ramos got into an accident before they got married. She has brain damage and Chris is now her caretaker.
Steven Tyler told her: “The reason why he’s singing so good is because he’s singing to you.” That was very touching.
For the record, I question why Chris and Juliana’s family would allow her to be exploited in this way. Seeing this beautiful girl “transform” after her traumatic brain injury in front of millions of viewers was so irresponsible and cruel.
However, I understand — after 10 seasons — that American Idol appeals to the most
common denominator, that’s why things like this and other “tragic” stories like dead wives, parents, grandparents in dementia, etc. are included in the show and even built up as the “grand finale” of a 2 hour episode.

Jimmy Buffett Falling (Accident) Video
Jimmy Buffett has been hospitalized in Sydney, Australia, for an apparent head injury after falling off the stage at a concert on Wednesday night, The Daily Telegraph of Sydney reported.
Mr. Buffett, 64, was performing during a sold-out concert at the Hordern Pavilion when — after singing the lines “It’s been a lovely cruise, I’m sorry it’s ended,” from his 1977 song “Lovely Cruise” — he fell off the stage into the front row. Audience members told The Telegraph that Mr. Buffett had fallen face-first and struck his head on the way down. He lay bleeding on the floor until he was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney some 30 minutes later. The Hordern show came after three sold-out concerts at the Sydney Opera House.
Obama State Of The Union Speech 2011(VIDEO)
Tonight I want to begin by congratulating the men and women of the 112th Congress, as well as your new Speaker, John Boehner. And as we mark this occasion, we are also mindful of the empty chair in this Chamber, and pray for the health of our colleague – and our friend – Gabby Giffords.
Obama State Of The Union Speech Video
It’s no secret that those of us here tonight have had our differences over the last two years. The debates have been contentious; we have fought fiercely for our beliefs. And that’s a good thing. That’s what a robust democracy demands. That’s what helps set us apart as a nation.
But there’s a reason the tragedy in Tucson gave us pause. Amid all the noise and passions and rancor of our public debate, Tucson reminded us that no matter who we are or where we come from, each of us is a part of something greater – something more consequential than party or political preference.
We are part of the American family. We believe that in a country where every race and faith and point of view can be found, we are still bound together as one people; that we share common hopes and a common creed; that the dreams of a little girl in Tucson are not so different than those of our own children, and that they all deserve the chance to be fulfilled.
Ferrer knocks injury-hit Nadal out of Australian Open (Video)
Worlds No.1 Tennis Player Injury Rafael Nadal Exist the Australian Open 2011
Injury-hit world number one Rafael Nadal was sensationally dumped from the Australian Open quarter-finals 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 by Spanish compatriot David Ferrer on Wednesday.
The defeat ended Nadal's bid for a fourth straight non-calendar year Grand Slam victory. Only Don Budge and Rod Laver have held all four titles at the same time.
Nadal, who appeared to have tears in his eyes during a changeover while trailing 3-0 in the third set, took a medical timeout for an apparent leg injury after three games and was clearly out of sorts, failing to chase down balls that he would ordinarily return easily.
David Ferrer will now take on Andy Murray (rank 5) in the semi-finals on 28 January. The other semi-final between Roger Federer (rank 2) and Novak Djokovic (rank 3) will take place on 27 January.
"I didn't know they were going to start this noise during our match, it was a difficult moment," said Zvonareva, who led the final set 3-0 before the disruptions but saw Kvitova level it at 4-4. "You're here to play tennis ... I was trying to keep my concentration."
This time it is particularly disappointing as Nadal was looking for the "Rafa Slam," or having won 4 straight majors in a row should he have won this tournament. Thoughts go out to Rafael and his fans after this unfortunate circumstance.

Jay Cutler injury Jay Cutler Leaves Game With Knee Injury (VIDEO)
Jay Cutler had sufficient toughness after his injury in yesterday’s NFC title game at his press conference today. Saying unequivocally, “our quarterback’s a tough guy,” he also wondered why exactly fellow players would be so quick to question Cutler’s will.
Rahm Emanuel Can't Run For Mayor, Not Chicago Resident Videos, Breaking News
The ruling, which was announced on Monday, comes as a significant and unexpected setback for Mr. Emanuel, who has been a front-runner both in polls and in fund-raising in the race to replace Richard M. Daley, the city’s longest-serving mayor, who will retire this spring.
The question of Mr. Emanuel’s residency — and whether he had lived in Chicago long enough to appear on the city’s ballot — had been a matter of debate since Mr. Emanuel departed the White House last fall to run for mayor.
Mr. Emanuel contended that he had always maintained a home in Chicago, the city where he was born, and that his time at the White House was a matter of national service. But Mr. Emanuel’s opponents said he did not meet the state’s residency requirements to run for a mayoralty, one of which is to have lived in the city for a year before the day of the election. His return to Chicago in the fall, they argued, was too late to qualify for a Feb. 22 ballot.
The Chicago Board of Elections concurred with Mr. Emanuel, as had a Cook County trial judge. But a three-judge panel of the Illinois Appellate Court ruled against him, 2 to 1. With time running short and ballot arrangements already being finalized, the issue seemed certain to go to the State Supreme Court.

Sargent Shriver Funeral Mass Held In Maryland (VIDEO)
R. Sargent Shriver was honored Saturday as much for his passion to help others embrace his love and enjoyment of baseball. Shriver, who served his brother-in-law John F. promise Kennedy campaign starting with the Peace Corps, the organization has developed to help an international force. Others who have worked to help others through charities were among the hundreds Shriver honored at a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mercy parish church family Shriver in Potomac, Maryland
Former President Bill Clinton, first lady Michelle Obama, U2 frontman Bono (scroll down to see his performance) and singer Wyclef Jean were among those in attendance, along with members of the Kennedy and Shriver families.
One by one, some of Shriver’s 19 grandchildren read short remembrances about their grandfather, recalling his passion for helping people, his hugs and his love of baseball.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington told Shriver’s grandchildren to live with the same courage and fortitude of Shriver and his late wife, Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Wuerl spoke of Shriver’s legacy and belief that the world could be filled with peace, compassion and love.
“Ask your parents to tell you stories. Read what your grandfather has written,” Wuerl said. “When you think of him, rejoice in the heritage he has given you.”
Shriver’s son, Anthony Shriver, welcomed the guests before the Mass began, cracking jokes and honoring his father.

UFC Fight for the Troops 2 results: Melvin Guillard takes out Evan Dunham Update
After Evan Dunham dropped a controversial decision to Sean Sherk at UFC 119, there were many that believed that one in the loss column was deserving of an asterisk next to it.
You can go ahead and remove that now.
That's because Melvin Guillard absolutely blitzed his way to a first round knockout win over Dunham at UFC Fight Night 23: "Fight for the Troops 2" in Fort Hood, Texas.
From the very beginning of the fight it was clear that Dunham would have trouble dealing with the speed of "The Young Assassin."
After eating a big shot, "3-D" tried to turn the fight into a grappling match, clinching and shooting for a takedown. He got it but it didn't last, and when Guillard got back to his feet it was only a short time before fireworks were let off.
Since moving to the Greg Jackson camp, Guillard has looked like a much more polished striker and that showed itself in this fight.
A big right hand rocked Dunham and he was hurt enough that "The Young Assassin" knew it was time to pounce.
And like a young hungry lion, that's exactly what he did.
To Dunham's credit, he pushed forward and continued to battle for as long as he could, but a few big knees, not to mention countless unanswered shots, and he was unable to continue.
Guillard has said he wants to fight for the title by the end of 2011 after going undefeated in 2010.
Is he on his way to doing just that?
Watch Steelers vs. New York Jets, 01/23/2011 LIVE Video
On Sunday the New York Jets take on the Pittsburgh Steelers for the right to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLV. The Jets enter the game flying high off of victories over the Patriots and Colts, while the Steelers took care of the Ravens after a first round bye. Lets take a look at some of the keys to the game which will be played at Heinz Field (6:30 EST).
Offense
Consistent Playcalling- New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has done an excellent job re-establishing the Jets “ground and pound” philosophy this postseason. On Sunday Schottenheimer must continue this trend against a tough, physical Steeler defense. This game has the potential to be a low scoring, defensive battle that will put field position at a premium. Brian must remain loyal to the running game, along with the short passing game that will keep the defense honest. This is not the type of game where you start getting fancy with your formations and strategies.
Offensive line play- In order for the Jets offense to have success on Sunday the offensive line will have to play their best game of the year. The Pittsburgh defense poses a variety of challenges as they play very aggressive against both the run and the pass. The Jets offensive line must find ways to win the battles in the trenches in order to establish their running game. There is a good chance that Pittsburgh will try to stack the box in order to force Mark Sanchez to throw the ball, therefore Gang Green must come up with a scheme to handle the run blitz.
In terms of pass protection the Jets will have their hands full with James Harrison (10.5 sacks), LaMarr Woodley (10 sacks), and All-World safety Troy Polamalu. Gang Green must remain consistent in protection and use max protect formations as needed. In week 15 the Jets had a NYL Protection Index rating of 81.1 and that type of performance must be repeated on Sunday. I would not be surprised to see the Jets use a variety of screen packages to try and slow down the pass rush.
Sanchez must shine- As mentioned earlier there is a very good chance that the Pittsburgh defense is going to stack the box and force Mark Sanchez to beat them with the passing game. Sanchez must take what the defense gives him and not start to force throws down the field. Mark has been very effective using the short passing game to open up the offense, and I expect to see the same approach on Sunday. Look for Sanchez to target Dustin Keller and Jerricho Cotchery early on to get into the rhythm of the game.
Number one priority for Sanchez: 0 turnovers
Interesting stat: If the Jets win on Sunday quarterback Mark Sanchez will be the first quarterback in history of the NFL with 5 road playoff wins. Not too bad for a second year quarterback.
Defense
Contain Big Ben- Even though the Jets defense has shut down the likes of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady the last two weeks, they are going to face a completely different challenge defending Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Sunday. Roethlisberger is a strong, mobile quarterback that does an excellent job of escaping pressure and making big plays down the field. The Jets defense must try to keep Big Ben in the pocket and finish off every chance they have to sack the Pittsburgh signal caller. Roethlisberger is known to take some big hits and the Jets need to take advantage and try to generate some turnovers.
Pass coverage- The New York Jets secondary is going to be facing a dynamic Steelers passing attack that has several explosive weapons. Wide receivers Hines Ward (5 tds) and Mike Wallace (10tds) have received the most attention, but rookies Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders have started to emerge as well. Add tight end Heath Miller to the mix and you can see how the Steelers could spread out the Jets defensive backfield. Gang Green must come up with a solid defensive scheme that can disrupt the Steelers passing attack.
In terms of match-ups I would put Darrelle Revis on Mike Wallace and let Antonio Cromartie take on Hines Ward. The key for all of the Jets defenders is to play physical and to not let the Steelers receivers get off the line easily.
Stop the run- The Steelers ground game features running back Rashard Mendenhall who had a breakout season in 2010 with over 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Jets defense must be able to contain Mendenhall along with the Steelers rushing attack in order to have success on Sunday. If Pittsburgh’s ground game gets going, Gang Green could get exposed in the secondary with the play action pass.
Prediction
I think this is going to be a very close, physical game that is going to be decided by a turnover or a mental mistake in the fourth quarter. Ok enough with the analyst talk.
As a long time Jets fan I could not be any more fired up for this Sunday’s AFC Championship game. While there was plenty of excitement last year against the Colts in the AFC Championship game, I think in the back of our minds many of us knew that the Jets would come up short. This year many, including yours truly, believe that Gang Green can get the job done and make their first appearance in the Super Bowl in over 40 years.
To me the New York Jets are on a mission as the team seems to be exorcising all of their football demons on the way to the Super Bowl. Gang Green took care of Peyton Manning in the Wild Card round to wipe out the bitter post season defeat last year. The Jets took care of the New England Patriots, their long time nemesis that routinely ruined their postseason dreams. Now the team faces the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz field, a place where the playoff failures of Jets coach Herman Edwards and kicker Doug Brien still linger.
I honestly believe that the New York Jets are going to find a way to win this game and advance to the Super Bowl. Whether it is with a huge special teams play, a defensive touchdown, or a touchdown strike by Mark Sanchez, Gang Green is getting the job done on Sunday. Jets 17-14
Side note: Recently I had a chance to interview former Jets great Victor Green and we discussed everything from the Jets vs Steelers match-up, to Rex Ryan, to Curtis Martin’s Hall of Fame bid. To listen to the interview click here. In addition check out Victor’s website www.classactsports.com where he posted an interview with Wayne Chrebet and will be breaking down the AFC Championship game.
