Born on January 16, 1979, today would have been Aaliyah Dana Haughton‘s 32nd birthday.

“I had such a crush on Aaliyah… It was like a little boy crush but it was a true crush,” rapper J. Cole reflects on his feelings for the widely admired R&B icon, who tragically died aged 22 in a plane crash on August 25, 2001.

On hearing the sad news at the time, then-teenage Jermaine was inspired to produce a beat in Aaliyah’s honour; “I remember slightly what the beat sounded like,” he says, “but that was my way to pay respect in my own little world, in my own room…”

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979. Today, the late singer would have been 32 years old. Aaliyah, along with eight others, was killed on August 25, 2001, in a plane crash in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas, after filming the music video for ‘Rock The Boat’.

Born in Brooklyn, and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah was one of the most innovative hip-hop/R&b singers of the last decade. She released her debut album titled ‘Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number’ in 1994, at the age of 14. Followed up by her ground breaking second album ‘One in a Million’ in 1996 and her outstanding self-titled album ‘Aaliyah’ in 2001, which were both influential.
